I have recently had a little wart type erruption appear on my forehead close to my hair line, but hidden by hair.
Thought I'd better get it checked out, and yes it is a type of sun damage. I have been given Efudix cream which is used to treat keratoses. I have to treat it for a month, after which time it will go away.
I really do not want to frighten anyone but rather to say be watchful and aware of any skin changes.
I only have to see the sun since being on mtx and without suncream I burn, it is so easy to get caught out.
I never have been one to sit in the sun, but I guess at the age of 62,and a childhood with no creams ,my skin has seen alot of sun.
One thing I am sure of and that is that I will be using factor 50 at the first sign of sun from now on, I shall also be carrying a small tube in my bag in case I have forgotten to put it on in the morning.

Sorry, came off a bit abruptly last night, battery was running low!!
Just to say I do feel a bit shaken by this. knowing the risks with these meds, mtx and biologics, is one thing, but experiencing the side effects is another.
However, without them I would be pretty immobile so its a risk I will travel with at the moment, although I shall try to be much more careful.
Enjoy your Sunday all.
I had a new little singer sewing machine for xmas so will be trying it out later on a bit mending that has arrived from the children! its good to be needed!
Also got the tai chi dvd that I wanted so will be trying that out too......

Hi Zena - sorry to hear you're feeling a bit shaken about this - I'm sure you've spotted it very early and will take care that it doesn't get any worse. You're totally right about us needing to keep aware of little changes and preventing any little problems from escalating. I used to take my health for granted and just relied on my body to handle anything I threw at it, but now that I'm on mtx I have to help it along. I've noticed that I get little infections very regularly now, and pre-RA I would've just ignored them and they would've healed up by themselves, but not any more - my gums and toe are this week's hassle! So now I'm constantly smelling of TCP, but it does seem to do the trick. I'm also aware that my thumb is starting to look a bit crooked - it doesn't hurt, but I'll talk to the OT next time I see her and ask about getting a splint. But I just keep reminding myself that RA is a constant companion but it doesn't rule my life - I'm a kinder person now and as a result of RA I've got new skills which I'm using in my new job - and as you say it feels good to be needed!

Hope you enjoy your new Singer - my sewing machine expired in a puff of smoke a few days ago - very sad seeing it go down to the tip!! You'll be busy with the new tai chi DVD - did you get the Paul Lam Tai chi for arthritis? Mine finally arrived, and I got 2 of the same DVD! Apparently they're doing a promotion and send 2 so one can be given away as a gift! So if anybody else would like a copy please let me know. I'm working through the 12 lessons very slowly, trying to memorise each one before I move onto the next - I've just got to lesson 3 - Wave hands - and I think I'll need to practice this one quite a bit before I go any further!! But as Dr Lam says "There's no hurry in tai chi"

Have a good day - Sylvia xx

That's great Dorothy - my email address is sylviax@mail.com - if you send me your postal address then I can send it to you. It'll be great to have a virtual tai chi group - a brill new year's resolution.

Fantastic news about your son - did you know he was about to propose or was it a bolt out of the blue? At least with it being your son as opposed to daughter you probably won't have to get too involved with all the preparations for the wedding. Have they set a date yet? Lots of exciting times to look forward to - very best wishes - Sylvia xx

Good on you for getting it checked!

I know on the mtx and other meds the sun effects you more, you have to be In shade and extra sun cream
My gran had one removed this summer and its been fine, not malignant thankfully but like you say, it's a bit of a worry

Hope you are set for a good new year Smile

Tried the dvd, just as well its to be taken slowly,
I was worn out after going through the warm up exercises a couple of times!!! BigGrin
I'm sure I will improve with time!!
It does exercise all the body very gently from top to toe and its good that its possible to carry on sitting down when the knees start to protest.

Yes good advice. I had one of these 'solar keratoses' on the side of my nose and it had to be frozen off with liquid nitrogen. It's left a scar but worth it to prevent the skin cancer that it could have turned into. I really believe that the sun does us good in moderation but also I know that being on Mtx I need to take extra care.

I've got your email Dorothy and will send the dvd out at the weekend.

Take it slowly Zena - honestly, simply moving gently but in the correct movement will do wonders for you. I've taken to doing a mini, subtle version, whilst waiting for the train - it warms me up a treat, so clearly it is working my muscles even though I don't feel like I've done any exercise. I felt a bit of a twit today, because I was doing the full arm movement bit in the ladies at work (just to loosen my shouders you know), and in walked the Director - it was a tad embarrassing as she proceeded to chat to me through the stall door - she seemed quite knowledgeable about tai chi, but I was too shy to ask if she does it too!

Take care - Sylvia xx

Hi Sylvia, got to the end of lesson 1 today! BigGrin
Feeling more comfortable with it the more I do it.
It taken a while to get into the type of slow controlled movement it needs, manage down to hips Ok but knees dont let me balance to do lower movements.
Hoping those muscles will gradually get stronger with gentle practice.
I do have a sense of achievment and well being after a session.

Naomi, it is a fine balance between a bit of healthy sun to get your vit D and too much isn't it?
I think about 10 minutes a day is recomended, must check it all out.
The trouble is, I find if I dont put on the cream first thing in the morning I'm more likely to forget it altogether!
Must get into a good routine.

Hi Zena - well done for getting through first lesson. When you first start, it does feel very strange doing the actions so slowly - but it does have benefits over time. I couldn't balance at all when I first tried, and was really wobbly for the next year or so. I'm still a bit unstable when I get tired but am vastly improved on how I started - and that's taken at least 3 years. My walking has definitely improved and I feel much more confident getting around, especially things like stepping off the pavement and going up and down stairs. So take it slow and gently - little and often s the tai chi way.

Best wishes - Sylvia xx

Hello everyone, just an update on my sunspot.
I thought that I had better ring the hospital at the beg. of last week to tell them about this keretoses on my forehead and my itchy skin problem before going for my abatercept infusion this month.
The nurse told me not to go and they would send me a quick app. which arrived for last thursday.
In the meantime I went back to see my G.P. on Wednesday.
The spot has shrunk, but not gone and it looks very inflamed because of the cream
He said not to worry but he will take it off in 4 wks time when the inflamation has gone down.
I asked if it might be connected to the drugs and he assured me no, he has just had one himself and it is just sun damage.
The next day I went for my hospital app. It was the first of the afternoon.
Before I even got in through the door my rheumatologist lifted the hair on my face to have a look.
I explained that the inflamation was due to the cream and the little wart in the middle was the damage, and that the doc said he would remove the rest of it in a few weeks time etc.
However, I am now being sent to see a skin specialist which may take 6 mnths to get an app. by which time there will be nothing to see!!
Even my itchy skin is much better with the emolient that I have been given.
In the meantime I cannot have any more infusions.
They are obviously taking it all very seriously but it all leaves me feeling a bit up in the air again after being convinced that it was all O.K.
It all feels a bit dramatic and I am now thinking about seeing this specialist when there is going to be nothing to look at!!Wub
My nurse said that these biologics are just so new that they cannot take any risks, so I guess I must just be grateful that I am being taken such good care of Smile
In the meantime its just a case of keeping my fingers crossed that my R.A. behaves itself!!!
Hope everyone is keeping fairly well and able to get about better now that the snow is shifting.
Trouble is its now gone from lovelly clean white dog to very dirty white dog Sad

Hi Zena - sorry to hear that you're having to hold off the infusions while you have the sunspot checked out - as you say it's reassuring to know that you're getting such attentive care but it must be annoying to have this interruption. Hope the RA behaves itself.

Sylvia xx
